WHEN ENVY MAKES A WISH
The strongest reason why the Pharisees handed Jesus to Pilate was envy! Pilate knew about it for sure Mat.27:18, Mk.15:10. They did not want to accept Jesus as the promised Messiah while all people had agreed about that Jn.7:31. The Pharisees together with the scribes already sat in Moses’ seat. They received too many respects and honours so that they became envious to the Real King of the Jew, the Messiah!
For where envy and self-seeking exist, confusion and every evil thing are there Jam.3:16. Because of envy, they decided to choose Barabbas rather than Jesus, they preferred to have a notorious prisoner, a robber, a killer, a rebel with them Luk.23:19 rather than having Messiah. Joseph was also sold into Egypt because his brothers became envious Ac.7:9. They preferred to see their father groaning in mourn rather than having a beloved good brother.
A sound heart is life to the body, but envy is rottenness to the bones Pr.14:30. Believers must be aware with envy as this could become a silent killer. A rotten bone soon or later will be broken. When envy makes a wish, it will be the sinful one! Envy will think evil, speak badly, and do corrupt things. Let’s learn from John the Baptist who ready to accept someone greater than himself and say: He must increase, but I must decrease Jn.3:30. If we live in the Spirit, let us also walk in the Spirit. Let us not become conceited, provoking one another, envying one another Gal.5:25-26.
KETIKA IRI HATI MENYATAKAN KEINGINANNYA
Alasan kuat mengapa orang-orang Farisi menyerahkan Yesus pada Pilatus adalah iri hati! Pilatus tahu tentang hal itu dengan pasti Mat.27:18, Mrk.15:10. Mereka tidak mau menerima Yesus sebagai Mesias yang dijanjikan sementara semua orang telah sepakat tentang hal itu Yoh.7:31. Orang-orang Farisi bersama para ahli Taurat sudah duduk di kursi Musa. Mereka menerima terlalu banyak penghargaan dan penghormatan sehingga mereka menjadi iri kepada Raja Sejati orang Yahudi, sang Mesias!
Sebab di mana ada iri hati dan mementingkan diri sendiri di situ ada kekacauan dan segala macam perbuatan jahat Yak.3:16. Karena iri, mereka memutuskan untuk memilih Barabas daripada Yesus, mereka lebih suka memiliki penjahat yang terkenal, perampok, pembunuh, pemberontak bersama mereka Luk.23:19 daripada memiliki Mesias. Yusuf juga dijual ke Mesir karena saudara-saudaranya iri hati Kis.7:9. Mereka lebih suka melihat ayah mereka meraung dalam dukacita, daripada memiliki seorang saudara yang baik.
Hati yang tenang menyegarkan tubuh, tetapi iri hati membusukkan tulang Ams.14:30. Orang percaya harus waspada dengan iri hati karena hal ini dapat menjadi pembunuh yang tersembunyi. Tulang yang busuk cepat atau lambat akan patah. Ketika iri hati menyatakan keinginannya, maka yang dihasilkan adalah dosa! Iri hati akan berpikir jahat, berbicara buruk, dan melakukan hal-hal yang merusak. Mari belajar dari Yohanes Pembaptis yang siap menerima Seseorang yang lebih besar dari dirinya dan berkata: Ia harus makin besar, tetapi aku harus makin kecil Yoh.3:30. Jikalau kita hidup oleh Roh, baiklah hidup kita juga dipimpin oleh Roh, dan janganlah kita gila hormat, janganlah kita saling menantang dan saling mendengki Gal.5:25-26.
