Daily Bible Reading: Acts 1, Leviticus 23-24
THE UPPER ROOM
The disciples just received the Great Commission. They also just got a very important promise about the Holy Spirit. They just saw 2 angels after Jesus ascended to heaven. But simply now they don’t know what to do, where to start, how to accomplish that instruction. So, they returned to Jerusalem and straight away they entered the upper room, stayed there, and continued with one accord in prayer and supplication.
The upper room also mentioned when Jesus asked the disciples to prepare the Passover. Somehow, someone already prepared a large, furnished upper room, where Jesus had His last supper with the disciples Luk.22:8-12. The memory of what had happened in the upper room must be very strong in the heart of the disciples so that they decide to pray there. We may simply say that the upper room is the most important room in the book of Acts where the early church commenced.
Believers also must have their ‘upper room’! It can be your study room, living room, bedroom, prayer room in the church, where we can pray seriously and passionately, lifting up our prayer and supplication to the Lord. When we feel afraid, just run to the ‘upper room’. When we do not know what to do, let’s run to the ‘upper room’. When Habakkuk was so confused about everything, he also waited upon the Lord at his ‘upper room’ Hab.3:1. Jesus said: when you pray, go into your room, and when you have shut your door, pray to your Father who is in the secret place; and your Father who sees in secret will reward you openly Mat.6:6.
RUANG ATAS
Para murid baru saja menerima Amanat Agung. Mereka juga baru saja mendapat janji yang sangat penting tentang Roh Kudus. Mereka baru saja melihat 2 malaikat setelah Yesus naik ke surga. Tapi sekarang mereka tidak tahu harus berbuat apa, mulai dari mana, bagaimana caranya menyelesaikan instruksi itu. Jadi, mereka kembali ke Yerusalem dan langsung menuju ruang atas, tinggal di sana, dan bertekun dengan sehati dalam doa bersama-sama.
Ruang atas juga disebutkan ketika Yesus meminta para murid untuk mempersiapkan Paskah. Entah bagaimana, seseorang sudah menyiapkan kamar atas yang besar dan lengkap, tempat Yesus mengadakan perjamuan terakhir bersama murid-murid Luk.22:8-12. Ingatan tentang apa yang terjadi di ruang atas pastilah melekat sangat kuat di hati para murid sehingga mereka memutuskan untuk berdoa di sana. Kita dapat mengatakan bahwa ruang atas adalah ruang yang paling penting dalam kitab Kisah Para Rasul di mana gereja mula-mula dimulai.
Orang-orang yang beriman juga harus memiliki ‘kamar atas’ mereka! Ruang itu mungkin adalah ruang belajar, ruang tamu, kamar tidur, atau ruang doa di gereja, di mana kita dapat berdoa dengan serius dan penuh semangat, mengangkat doa dan permohonan kita pada Tuhan. Ketika kita merasa takut, larilah ke ‘kamar atas’. Ketika tidak tahu apa yang harus dilakukan, larilah ke ‘kamar atas’. Ketika Habakuk sangat bingung tentang banyak hal, dia juga menunggu Tuhan di ‘kamar atas’ Hab.3:1. Yesus berkata: jika engkau berdoa, masuklah ke dalam kamarmu, tutuplah pintu dan berdoalah kepada Bapamu yang ada di tempat tersembunyi. Maka Bapamu yang melihat yang tersembunyi akan membalasnya kepadamu Mat.6:6.
