Daily Bible reading: Matthew 2, Genesis 4-6
STAR IN THE EAST
How come the wise men from the East came to Jerusalem because of that star while the local people of Jerusalem did not realize about it. Even after they shocked for the visitation of those wise men, they remained at their dwelling place and no one followed the wise men to find the real King of the Jews. The star was mentioned once in the book of Moses when Balaam got the heavenly vision that a star shall come out of Jacob and a sceptre shall rise out of Israel Num.24:17. Unfortunately, the chief priest and the scribes paid no attention for that prophecy until the wise men arrived there.
As we read our daily Bible reading today, we could learn a very important attitude from the wise men. They paid their attention seriously to the word of God more than anyone in Jerusalem. They kept waiting for that star year by year even from generation to generation. How excited the wise men when at last they could see the star that they had already waited for so long, and they met Jesus, the Saviour of the world!
Apostle Paul warned us: if then you were raised with Christ, seek those things which are above, set your mind on things above, not on things on the earth, so that when Christ come again for the second time, then you also will appear with Him in glory Col.3:1-4.
BINTANG DI TIMUR
Bagaimana mungkin orang majus dari Timur datang ke Yerusalem karena bintang itu sementara penduduk lokal Yerusalem tidak menyadarinya. Bahkan setelah mereka terkejut karena kedatangan orang Majus, mereka tetap tinggal di tempat dan tidak ada seorangpun yang mengikuti orang Majus untuk menemukan Sang Raja orang Yahudi. Bintang itu pernah disebutkan satu kali dalam kitab Musa ketika Bileam mendapat penglihatan surgawi bahwa sebuah bintang akan terbit dari Yakub dan tongkat kerajaan akan bangkit dari Israel Bil.24:17. Sayangnya, imam kepala dan ahli Taurat tidak memperhatikan nubuatan itu sampai orang Majus tiba di sana.
Sementara kita mengikuti jadwal pembacaan Alkitab hari ini, kita dapat mempelajari suatu sikap yang sangat penting dari orang Majus. Mereka memperhatikan Firman Tuhan dengan sangat serius lebih dari siapapun yang ada di Yerusalem. Mereka terus menunggu munculnya bintang itu tahun demi tahun bahkan dari generasi ke generasi. Betapa senangnya orang-orang Majus ketika akhirnya mereka melihat bintang yang telah dinantikan begitu lama, dan mereka bertemu Yesus, Sang Juruselamat dunia!
Rasul Paulus memperingatkan kita: kalau kamu dibangkitkan dengan Kristus, carilah perkara yang di atas, pikirkanlah perkara yang di atas, bukan yang di bumi, sehingga ketika Kristus menyatakan diri lagi untuk kedua kalinya, maka kamupun akan menyatakan diri bersama dengan Dia dalam kemuliaan Kol.3:1-4.
